Convention on Modern Liberty: Shami Chakrabarti

On the 28th February I’m going to attend the Convention on Modern Liberty:

It will ask three broad questions:

  • Are our freedoms and rights threatened by an over-powerful state and if so how do we defend ourselves from this?
  • Are dangers to our security from terrorism and other threats, from climate change to pandemics being used to attack our rights, and how can we best defend ourselves?
  • How can we arouse sustained public interest?

It will be supported by the Guardian, with speakers and organisers from groups like Liberty and NO2ID. With the government pushing ID cards and the superdatabase, and already forcibly sharing our personal information with a host of its departments and other organisations, only backing down from an addiction to the DNA database because of the European Court on Human Rights, a convention like this couldn’t be more timely. Join me there, and watch what Liberty’s director Shami Chakrabarti has to say about it.
