Now because this is a major episode, transmitted early on BBC 3, I’m going to give some
I said this series had gone into high gear, didn’t I? With the introduction of Martha Jones from Doctor Who, both she and Jack now referencing their time together in Who directly, Torchwood is fully realising its potential. Not only does it acknowledge the tensions between Owen and Tosh, particularly after last episode, but with the introduction of Martha, other, new dynamics take hold. After her departure from the Tardis at the end of DW Series 3, she’s now become a medical genius for UNIT, seconded to Torchwood, and Jack couldn’t be happier. Together they investigate Alan Dale’s (even more dastardly than in Ugly Betty) bioresearch corporation, healing people from incurable diseases and then killing them. And when Jack sends Martha undercover to find out what’s really going on, then things start to go wrong.
And Martha’s left with the question of who recommended her for UNIT in the first place. She and Jack believe it was the Doctor, yet he has a habit of ignoring his assistants the moment they leave. Someone else has their eye on her – will this be what drives her return to DW from Torchwood early in season 4?
I must confess I was dumbstruck when Owen was killed – I just didn’t see it coming. To have a ‘Spooks’ moment in a programme like this is quite refreshing. Rumours are abounding that we haven’t seen the last of him, so I hope 2:7 doesn’t get riddled with clichés, undoing the emotional power of the ending here.
