However, 'idiot' on its own covered all possibilities quite neatly :o) Funnily, in my Dictionary, it lists 'idiot' as a historical term for the state or condition now called 'profound mental retardation'. A LOL moment me thinks. Cynical, calculating, dogmatic, self-obsessed, adjective, adjective, utilitarian AND idiot would be deadly accurate but for me. He wasn't an idiot at all, rather deeply cynical, egotistical and arrogant. I can't forget that he attempted to gain religious opt-outs for the Sexual Orientation Regulations, I can't forget that he trumpeted an equal age of consent in opposition and then continued to fight it in government, nor that the SORs and other equality legislation came from the Treaty of Amsterdam, not a domestic equality agenda. But I don't agree with the bit about the "idiot predecessor". Whatever Blair was (cynical, calculating, dogmatic, self-obsessed, adjective, adjective, utilitarian) surely he wasn't an idiot? It's possible to forgive stupidity if that's honestly what it is... but could you forgive Blair for some of the things he did? That’s a great gutsy post.
