Germany’s state-owned railway company is seeking permission to run passenger trains through the Channel Tunnel in direct competition with Eurostar.
I’d tend to agree it’s a good move if it happens. There aren’t enough pressures on Eurostar to keep lower prices, innovate services (despite the excitement of St Pancras International) or improve quality (when is the Eurostar refurbishment programme going to happen?). A direct St Pancras – Cologne ICE service would be a huge step forward.
